I suppose you can tell a lot about a person’s interest by the photos they post and I noticed that I have had a pretty good run of China photos. Therefore, I decided it was time to make a transition back to nature photography, at least for a while.
This photo of a Mandarin Duck was taken at Duke Garden’s in Durham. It was sitting on a rock next to the water’s edge resting on one leg. I used a 450mm lens to avoid scaring the bird off and to isolate it from its surroundings. The result was a fascinating repetition of patterns. The striking colors of the ducks feathers are remarkable, but I also like the subtle feathering of the water texture in the background. This is something unique to digital photography that I have never seen in film photographs.
