Great Blue Heron

One of the things that has amazed me is how much wildlife there is in the area where we live. Under normal conditions North Carolina receives a fair amount of rainfall, which makes for a good habitat for birds and water fowl and all kinds of other creatures. One of the birds that has impressed me the most is the Great Blue Heron.

This bird is tall and so thin that it almost disappears, especially when stalking prey, but when it takes flight its massive wings turn it into another creature. This picture came about on a family canoe outing at Bond Park. We spotted the bird making its way along the shore, but as we approached it flew off to the far end of the lake. So off we rowed. As we approached again, the bird once more took to the air and that is when I made this shot.
