Living in China for 13 years, we saw a lot of heartbreaking scenes. People often shared their sorrows with us, while many others remained silent about their lives. Of the many thousands of people I photographed in China, I often wonder what has become of them. This little girl would be in her late teens or early twenties by now. She appeared to have spent the night with her family in an enclosure near Tiananmen Square, as I came across her early in the morning. She walked out of the enclosure, stopped and stared long enough for me to take a few pictures and then she was gone. She was covered with dirt and her sandals were wearing thin. There was obviously someone who cared though; someone that would take the time to tie up her hair with yarn.
